Biography
Dutch saxophonist Mischa van der Wekken (b. 1979) released his debut album 'Momentum' in the fall of 2008. It features his international quintet, trumpet soloist Eric Vloeimans, and a suite he composed and arranged for saxophone quartet.
In may 2009 he was selected as ‘Artist Deserving Wider Recognition’ by Stichting JazzNL, which gave him the opportunity to perform with his quintet on the annual Dutch Jazz Day in Amersfoort.
Mischa studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (NL). With the Royal Conservatory Big Band he made five appearances at the North Sea Jazz Festival, featuring guest conductors/soloists such as Slide Hampton, Peter Herbolzheimer, Jim McNeely, Kenny Wheeler and Michael Brecker.
In 2003-2004 Mischa studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he specifically focused on developing his skills as a composer and arranger. He also took private lessons with the eminent American saxophonist Rick Margitza, who has been based in Paris since a few years.
As a sideman Mischa played many concerts and recorded several cd’s with the Holland Big Band, Dual City Concert Band, Millennium Jazz Orchestra, New Generation Big Band, Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, Young Sinatra’s, Glenn Miller Orchestra and The Ramblers. He also worked in the orchestra’s of theatre productions such as Chicago, Dirty Dancing, Tarzan, Bubblin’ Brown Sugar and Evita.
